Montana Roots, Crafted With Care
Hello friends,
We’re Serena and John Carley, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome you to Speakeasy 41 Brewery. Our journey to this moment has been filled with adventure, faith, and a deep love for Montana—a place we are proud to call home.
I (Serena) grew up in Missoula and Frenchtown, bartending and managing bars before joining the Navy in 1985. It was during my time at Naval Air Station Brunswick that I met John. He was confident from the start, but it took a little convincing for me. After a lunch date, the rest was history—we were married just a few months later.
Life took us all over the country, from upstate New York to Ohio, through struggles and triumphs. In 1999, during a trip back to Montana, we found ourselves stranded in Big Timber. As the morning sun glowed on the Crazy Mountains, I felt something shift. When John asked what was wrong, I told him, “Please don’t make me leave.” That moment led us back to Montana for good, and we’ve never looked back.
Years later, while working at the post office, John befriended Jaramiah Bunker, the manager of Speakeasy 41. One day, John came home with news that Jaramiah and Carmen were moving to Florida and selling the brewery. Without hesitation, I asked, “So… are we buying a brewery?”
With faith and a few twists and turns along the way, we took over in February 2024 and proudly made Speakeasy 41 ours in May 2024.
Now, we invite you to come be part of this next chapter with us. Speakeasy 41 isn’t just a brewery—it’s a community. Whether you’re here for a great craft beer, a cozy seat by the fire, or just good conversation, we hope you feel right at home.
